Question:
What is the best way to recruit great board members?
Answer:
How do we recruit folks who are going to make up a great board? I
think of Jim Collins saying the first step is to get the right people on
the bus. He’s so right, in every aspect of business or ministry, but the
first step is to be bold.
So oftentimes we bypass the people who could make a great
contribution on our boards by saying, “That person is so busy,” or
“That person serves on boards so much larger than ours,” that we fail
to ask.
So, be bold.
And, as you approach the person that you’d like to recruit, do your
homework ahead of time. Make sure that you can answer the question
of how can this person serve your company or your ministry. When
that person being recruited understands that he or she has a major
contribution to make, the answer very often will be “yes.”
