Question:
My household income is inconsistent…How do I know how much to
give?
Answer:
Now, there are a lot of people who operate on a commission basis, or
they have highly variable income, and the question is, “How do I know
how much to give?” Well, there’s a couple of ways that you could
handle it. One, is that you could make an estimation, if you will, of
what you plan on earning in the year, and give on a proportionate
basis, or on a regular basis. I do believe that giving every week is a
good thing, because it reminds me every week of where all of the
resources I have came from. Giving is not because God needs the
money, but it’s in recognition of His ownership, and it’s a
demonstration to me that He is the provider of it. So, even if you have
a highly variable income, you can give on a regular basis, making it an
estimated amount.
The other alternative, of course, is every time you get the large check,
you write the tithe check right out of that. And that’s perfectly
legitimate, too, but I would recommend that you give something on a
regular basis; so that you understand and you demonstrate every
single week that everything you have came from God. He owns it all,
and I am a manager of all those things that He entrusted me with.
