Question:
What are some creative gift ideas between grandparents and their
grandchildren?
Answer:
Probably the most creative thing that Judy and I have done at
Christmastime, with our grandchildren, was that we decided we really
didn’t need any gifts from them, and so for them to go buy us
something was a waste of their time and something that probably we
wouldn’t necessarily use.
So what we decided to do was at Thanksgiving—when we were all
together for Thanksgiving—we gave each of our grandchildren a
hundred dollars, and we said, “This is your gift to us, and the gift is,
you have to give this money away to someplace or someone that has a
need before Christmas, and then just write us a note and tell us where
the money went. Your gift to us is to give away this money and to
write us the note.”
Now, I want to tell you, it was phenomenal to see what they did and
how they engaged in this. They immediately began to look around for
the needs. In one case, it was a need that a classmate had, and so it
was a literal cash gift to a classmate. In another case, it was giving to
a program that the church had that was for needy people at
Christmastime.
It focused all of their attention on giving away something to someone
who had a great need, and it changed it from “what I’m going to get at
Christmastime,” to “what I can give at Christmastime,” and it was a
tremendous gift to Judy and I.
I think it’s probably one of best things we’ve ever done, I just wish
we’d have known about it a long time ago. Just to be real clear about
it: This was not our gift to them, this was their gift to us. We still gave
them their toys and their clothes and so forth. So, we still gave them
gifts. This was their gift to us that we were able to help with.
