Question:
Should I help my adult child purchase a home?
Answer:
Helping your children buy a home is a difficult question, especially if
you’ve got the financial wherewithal to do it. What you don’t want to
do is commit your children to a lifestyle that they really can’t afford in
the long term, or that commits them to vocational choices that maybe
God doesn’t want them in, in the long term.
So, what we have done is we have helped our children realize that
they need to save for a down payment on a home—they saved, they
made the down payment, and they did it in conjunction with what they
could afford, in consideration of what they could afford. So, they got
themselves into a home that they could afford, by saving for it.
Then, what Judy and I decided to do was that we did want to help
them, but we didn’t want to change their lifestyle. So, with our
children, we have given them on a regular basis, monthly basis, a
certain amount of money that goes toward the prepayment of their
mortgage—and that’s the only thing that they could use that for.
It’s a way for us to do some good estate planning, it’s a way for us to
help them financially, but it doesn’t change the lifestyle that they
have.
And I think that parents who have the ability to help their children in
homes have got to really be careful that they don’t mistake short-term
desires for long-term consequences.
It’s kind of the law of unintended consequences. If my children end up
in a home that commits them to a vocational choice, or that commits
them to a lifestyle that they really can’t afford, or that God doesn’t
even want them participating in, then you’ve made a huge mistake,
and you’ve gotten in God’s way of dealing with those children.
