iQuestions Faculty, Ron Blue
Question:
What should our perspective be as parents regarding training our
children to manage money?
Answer:
RON BLUE: You know, one of the things that we need to know is “How
do we start when it comes to training our children to manage money?”
—and I think a proper framing or a proper perspective is the thing that
we need. Probably the first point, when it comes to the perspective, is
that we’re in a battle with a culture that doesn’t reward good spending
habits, it doesn’t reward biblical principles of managing money—so,
right away, we’re in a battle. That’s a perspective that we need to
have.
I think, secondly, we need to have the perspective that there aren’t a
lot of role models out there. I remember Judy’s aunt, her Aunt Abbess,
who was a teacher, a life-long teacher, and she was a phenomenal role
model, when it came to managing money and spending money. She
never ran out of money. She lived to a ripe old age, and everything
was in order. Aunt Abbess was a role model for both of us.
I think, thirdly, is that most of us as parents are really poorly trained.
There are no training classes, when it comes to training your children
to manage money. We don’t learn that in school or in college or in our
churches. In fact, one of our great mentors was Dr. Howard
Hendricks, and Howie had a couple of things to say about perspective
also.
JUDY BLUE: That is for sure. And, like Ron said, we don’t have classes
on training our children. As a matter of fact, we don’t even have any
classes on training ourselves how to manage money. So, when you
start out in raising your family, it’s kind of an interesting challenge to
figure out where to start.
Unfortunately and fortunately, once you’ve figured it out, you’re out of
a job. So, even though we had five children and had five opportunities
to learn, we were still in the process of learning—and it’s really fun,
now that we have eight grandchildren, and have the opportunity to
even try more wonderful biblical principles on helping them understand
money management.
Whether or not you’re successful as a parent will not be determined
until your children have raised their children. That’s another thing that
Dr. Howard Hendricks used to remind us of on a regular basis.
And we’re having the privilege of watching our children do a wonderful
job raising our grandchildren.
RON: You know, I think, Judy, that if a parent has the perspective,
ultimately, I am going to be evaluated on how my children raise their
children, it puts it into a long-term perspective—and if we had to
summarize it all, it would be, you’re not out of a job until your children
have raised their children, and then you’ll know how you did.
