iQuestions Faculty, Ron Blue
Question:
Should I ever stop working?
Answer:
You know, there’s a great myth in American culture today, and that is
when I reach a particular age, I can quit working. I think, from a
biblical standpoint, that retirement is not biblical. But, I do believe that
re-hirement is biblical. In other words, it may be when you reach
retirement age that you change vocations.
It’s been my experience—I think statistically it’s been proven—when
people quit working and retire to a life of leisure, their life expectancy
drops dramatically. In fact, I’ve seen one study that says when
somebody quits completely they have about a three-year life
expectancy—because all of a sudden, they’ve lost purpose and
meaning.
I know a fellow that retired and his purpose is to play golf 365 days a
year. Well, that gets pretty old—and there’s no meaning to that,
there’s no purpose to that.
I believe God has prepared us experientially, when we reach what
would be called retirement age, what He’s done is He’s really prepared
us for something more significant—it is to use the wisdom and
experience I’ve been given to continue to make a contribution to my
church and my culture, my family and my grandchildren, and so forth.
So, retirement to a life of leisure? No. But retirement to be re-hired?
Yes.
