Question:
Why do pastors have an unusually high susceptibility to internet
pornography?
Answer:
Pastors have an unusually high susceptibility to internet pornography.
Unfortunately, it goes with the kind of profession they’re in. A lot of
hours are spent on the internet. A lot of hours are spent in study.
That’s the first challenge, because always with addiction, availability is
a major issue.
The second major issue for pastors is that they live in a bubble.
Oftentimes, they’re not in accountability groups. The oddity is that
many times, churches will push small groups and accountability
groups, but the last people in an accountability group will be the
pastors, themselves.
And also because of the cultural need for them to look good, they
cannot be honest about the struggles in their life.
When you’re standing on a pedestal, it’s hard to have problems. Those
are the three factors that make susceptibility of pastors to internet
pornography a bit higher than the general population. It’s the fact that
internet pornography is available on their desktop, secondly, that
they’re often not in significant relationships of accountability, and then
thirdly they are trained not to be transparent concerning their own
issues. They have to be perfect, they have to be holy.
Unfortunately the only Holy One who exists is God, Himself—and
pastors are like all the rest of us: mere human beings.
