iQuestions Faculty, Dr. Kevin Leman
Question:
Are violent video games harming my child?
Answer:
Hey, what a great question. I often ask myself, “Hey, if I asked that to
a donkey, would he kick my brains out?”
You know, obviously, any kind of violent video games is not a good
thing for kids, and one of the reasons it’s not good is that it
anesthetizes, if you will, to violence.
We live in a very violent time. Sit there some night during prime time,
and just watch commercials. Just watch commercials! I’m talking
about ABC, NBC, FOX, any of the stations. Just watch the
commercials, and count the violent acts.
We don’t bat an eye at it! It’s second-hand to us. We see on the late
news that two people were shot in a drug bust, or whatever. “No big
deal!” That’s a crime that we feel about those things in our country
today.
We don’t need to feed the kids anything that’s violent.
And I’m not a “peace-at-any-price” tree-hugger. I’m a regular guy. I’m
just telling you that this makes sense. Don’t let your kids do
everything they want.
Let me give you just a little bit of wisdom from a guy—look at me. I’m
going to die soon. I mean, I’m fat, I’m ugly, and a few other things.
But this thing you can count on. The smart parent knows the
difference between what your kids want and what they need.
There’s the parent that’s got wisdom.
Kids, because they’re hedonistic, because their immature, they just
want, and want, and want. They’re the gimme generation. It’s the
smart parent who gives them Vitamin N, which is “no,” or, “No, not
yet, Honey.”
