Question:
Should I get into a recovery group?
Answer:
It’s an important question to ask yourself, “Should I get into a
recovery group?” This is how you answer that question. You have to
decide, are you merely dealing with temptation, or are you into
compulsion.
Compulsion is when your mind is preoccupied with whatever the item
is. It could be something as simple as workaholism, or something far
more complex, such as heroin addition. Whatever it is, if you find your
mind and heart just revolving around that topic throughout the day,
you should get into some sort of recovery group.
The two things we need to do—restructure the life and restructure the
heart.
We restructure the life by getting into the schedule of a recovery
group. If you have an accountability partner, which is great, an
accountability group, that will allow the new structure to impinge on
the old habits.
But also there is the place of restructuring the heart, and in these
group meetings and the readings and all of the other resources that
come with a recovery group, the issues of the heart can be addressed.
The greater the slavery, the greater the addiction, the greater the
addiction’s damage, the more important it is to get into a group—
because these are serious issues, but these serious issues can be
addressed and they can be beaten.
