Question:
What should every man know about a woman’s perspective on food?
Answer:
When a guy looks at a burger he sees a burger. When a woman looks
at a hamburger, she sees calories. And, one of the things that every
guy needs to file away in relationship to women is what the culture is
doing to women. There is an incredible emphasis on the visual, on the
appearance of women in this culture.
A couple of months ago I was at South Lake Tahoe talking to a group
of Christian women about appearance, and 85% of 73 women who
were there— 85% of them— felt that they were unattractive and not
desirable.
The irony was that these women were gorgeous— very pretty young
women. Unfortunately, they have been so inundated by our culture
that no matter how pretty they appeared, they always felt that they
had to look better. And because of that issue of their personal identity
being connected to their personal appearance, food takes on an
inflated value and a significance that, properly, it should have.
Men should understand that the shame that they grapple with
oftentimes when it comes to pornography is very similar to the shame
that women struggle with concerning their appearance and food. Both
genders need to have compassion for one another. Our culture is
reducing men to their sex drive and women to their appearance.
Guys have to rise above the culture and really begin to encourage
women concerning the real personal properties that matter. Will,
compassion, heart, intellect, endeavor, spirit— all of those positive
things that go with personality. And, so, when a woman looks at a
burger she looks at in quite a different way.
