iQuestions Faculty, Dr. David Eckman
Question:
How does the present intellectual and political climate create the
culture of addiction?
Answer:
Our present political and intellectual climate just feeds addiction. If
you go out to our university campuses and our college campuses,
you’ll discover that people are being reduced merely to their appetites.
There’s not a working definition of what it means to be a human being.
There’s not a working definition of what it means to be a woman or a
man. There’s no distinction being emphasized between the genders.
People are being reduced to their appetites. That kind of background is
dangerous. Because, what it does is when a person is reduced to their
appetites the only thing that is left is the pleasure they get from their
appetites.
We live in a culture of non-definition. People do not know who they
are. That being the case, the Bible becomes incredibly important,
because it tells us who we are. It tells us that we’re made in the image
of God. It tells us that we have value as an individual person. It gives
dignity to our gender. That being the case, we need to discover who
we are in this culture of chaos.
