iQuestions Faculty, Dr. David Eckman
Question:
Is workaholism an addiction?
Answer:
Workaholism is an addiction. There are two kinds of addictions,
according to the experts: soft addictions and hard addictions.
Hard addictions are based on what you inject or ingest. Soft addictions
are based on the relationships or non-relationships of life. A person
can find work far more pleasurable than family life or relationships,
and they do not realize the long-term damage that comes into the life
because they’re addicted to the pleasure of work.
When a person is working sixty, seventy, eighty hours a week, they do
not have time to be human, and it’s the long-term damage to family
and relationships where the price is going to be paid.
Is workaholism an addiction? Sure. It changes the chemistry of the
mind, it affects the emotions, it causes damages in the life. That’s the
definition of an addiction.
