Question:
Is there any way to help our children not become sexually addicted?
Answer:
There is a critical strategy that parents should undertake in order to
keep their kids from becoming sexually addicted. That strategy is to
have a happy home.
What drives addiction is unaddressed pain in the life. Happy hearts
don’t become addicted hearts. So, here’s the critical few elements for
addiction-proofing:
First, it’s “happy hearts don’t become addicted hearts.” Parents who
like and love each other. Parents who aren’t driven to workaholism.
Parents who aren’t driven into addiction themselves. Parents who are
happy with themselves and with each other.
Secondly, learning how to nurture. Learning how to comfort your kids
is critically important. Because it’s through comfort, it’s through
compassion that coaching can take place with the children. A healthy
environment is the best prevention to keep children from becoming
sexually addicted.
There are practical things you can do. You can always put a filter
program on the computer. You can always take the computer and put
it in the public access areas of the home. You can always monitor what
comes through the TV set. But vastly more important than that is the
atmosphere in the home—a healthy, safe, affectionate atmosphere is
the best addiction-proofing there is.
