Question:
Does God have anything to say to the addict?
Answer:
God has some wonderful things to say to the addict. The first thing He
has to say in the Bible is “you are vastly more than the addiction you
are struggling with.”
The problem with addiction is that it focuses the mind into a very
narrow channel. While the reality is, you are vastly more than
anything you are struggling with. You are made in the image of God.
You are a magnificent creature, profoundly and wonderfully made.
But, with addiction, unfortunately, you are sort of walking backwards
through life. And if you try and walk backwards through a room, you
will find it very uncomfortable, very confusing, and easy to trip. That’s
the problem with addiction. You are designed to walk forward, and
what God has to say to you, is He describes what a full, wholesome,
healthy humanity is.
The Bible is God’s message to the addicted. Addiction will strike about
27% of the adult population. It’s actually a terrifically common
problem. And because it’s a common problem, the truth of the Bible
addresses that problem. Addiction is as old as humanity. And, the God
of the Bible addresses addictive behavior.
First thing you need to remember: you’re vastly greater than your
problem. You are made in the image of God. Secondly, because God
took seriously the problems that go with addiction—the wrongdoing
that often occurs during addiction—He had His Son die for those
problems, so that the payment has already been made for all the
damage that you may have caused with your addiction.
That being the case, God takes you very seriously. You’re worth a Son
to Him. His Son has died in your stead. That being the case,
remember, God has a lot to say to you, and it’s in the Bible.
