iQuestions Faculty, John D. Beckett
Question:
What should I do when I must release an employee?
Answer:
I think of all the difficult things that we have to do in leadership, it’s
terminating another employee.
It’s never pleasant, it’s always difficult, but one thing that we can do is
to treat that person with as much dignity and respect as we possibly
can. That means having compassion on the individual. It means
separating out what they may have done to cause the termination
from the individual, themselves, and trying to just make them as
whole as possible in the process.
For that person, it’s one of the toughest things that they are going to
go through, and so they need to know that we have compassion and
understanding.
