Question:
How do you handle situations where you see ethics violated?
Answer:
In the workplace, you might run across situations where you see
integrity or ethics violations.
The first thing to remember is your job is not to be the “ethics cop.”
Remember, your job is to be a great employee in whatever situation
you are in. So, first, you’ve got to keep doing a great job.
Second is, sometimes you will see those things emerge. You will see
situations where something isn’t right here. In those situations, you
need to go make sure that the appropriate people are aware of that
situation.
But sometimes, as you think about those ethics situations, you might
be concerned or fearful that there may be some form of retaliation or
consequence that comes back to you. Again, in the workplace, it’s your
responsibility to make sure that ethics are properly being executed by
you and by the team that you work with.
Your job is not to be “ethics cop,” but when they cross your path,
when you see them, it’s your responsibility to get your data together,
bring them forward, and take that information to human resources,
controller, finance—whoever is the appropriate person in your
company—and present the data, and then it’s their responsibility to
make sure that it’s fixed and taken care of.
Sometimes, you’re not going to have all of the information.
Sometimes, what you think may be an ethics or a violation of business
practices may not be. Other times, the people that you’re presenting
the data to, they won’t have all the data. They won’t have your
perspective. That’s why it’s so important that you put the data
together, take it to them, and present the case that is concerning you
in that environment.
At that point, you can feel good that you’ve done your job, and now
you’re ready for them to do theirs.
