Question:
What do you do when the demands become too great?
Answer:
Every once in a while, in your job and the assignment that you’re in,
you just get overwhelmed. There’s just too much to do.
A couple of thoughts on that to ponder. As you’re in those situations,
one is, make sure that you’ve worked out clearly your priorities and
worked out the expectations of your job with your boss. Sometimes
they just say to do more than any human could possibly get done.
Second, you may be in an environment where there simply is a season
where you need to put more work in. You need to work harder or work
longer hours may be just requiring that to be the case. You need to
give it all you’ve got.
We have some big projects at Intel where people might work on them
for four years, and as you come up on the end of them, they are just
all-consuming. They can take every minute of every day that you
possibly put into it. In the seasons of those projects, you’ve got to give
it all you’ve got, and you may need to de-prioritize some of your
personal or family time.
Finally, you need to put the final season in place, where you restore
the proper priorities of your work and family and personal times. If
you’re doing that, then this season may be an intense work season,
but you follow it with a season of recovery and rest and rejuvenation.
Of course, if your job always requires you to be in that intense season,
and it never lets up, it might simply be the wrong job. They may be
expecting more than you possibly can do. They may have given you
the work of three or four people. You have to look at considering
another assignment.
Ultimately, you have to be in a place where you can have a stride that
you could be in for the long-term, where you enjoy it, you’re being
productive, challenged, and working hard, but yet believe that you can
keep that proper balance of the assignment as well.
