iQuestions Faculty, Pat Gelsinger
Question:
What is the most important character trait on the job?
Answer:
In the workplace, it’s important to know what it is that people are
looking for, and what is that character trait that’s most important to
the assignment at hand.
Obviously, you’re there to do a great job. You’re there to be a great
employee. You want people to look at you in the workplace and say,
“Wow, that guy is dedicated. He is capable of that assignment. He is
trustworthy. He is ethical. He has high integrity in the workplace.”
And ultimately, what I always look for is people with passion that they
bring to the assignment, they bring to the workplace. You know, not
just clocking in each day and out each night, but they come with the
true desire to be great—and whatever assignment, whatever project
they’re working on, that that passion just comes forward, and you
know that they will bring that as part of your team.
You know, if two people are there, and I get to choose between Fred
and Mary, and Mary is the passionate one, I’ll always choose Mary,
because I know that I’m going to get 101% from her. I know that no
matter the situation, she’s going to be creative, she’s going to always
be looking to give it just a little bit more.
If you can approach your job with passion—just the desire to be great
in the workplace—man, it is contagious to those around you. Your boss
and the team and the company, they’re just going to say, “Wow. She’s
the one I want.”
