Question:
How about peers who create trouble?
Answer:
In the workplace, it’s not just you. You’ll always have peers, and
sometimes the relationships with some of those peers may just be a
little bit challenging or difficult.
One, make sure that you keep doing a great job. Even though some of
those peer relationships may not be perfect, you don’t want that to
reflect on your performance.
Second, what can you do to make that situation better? What’s the
challenge, what’s the difficulty? Are there things that you might reach
out to be able to address? Maybe there are technical issues, maybe
there are personal issues, but engage with that individual and see if
you can help make that situation better.
Often, you will find that it’s not just the person, there’s some
environment or some issue going on as well. Ultimately, if you’ve kept
your job up, your performance is great, you’ve reached out, you’ve
developed a relationship with that individual, you’ve done everything
you can, and it’s still a problem, then you need to have a conversation
with your supervisor, and explain the situation and what you’ve done.
They might have things they want you to do as well, or they may need
to step in and address some issue with that other individual— but don’t
let it linger and harbor and hurt the performance of you or the team.
It’s important that you address it, because ultimately it’s not going
away. You have to make sure that you resolve the issue.
