iQuestions Faculty, Pat Gelsinger
Question:
Any special advice for woman in business?
Answer:
Women in the workplace today is a pretty hot topic, and what you find
in many places is that there seems to be bias or the “glass ceiling,” as
it’s been called, for women in certain roles and situations.
In the technology industry, like I’m in, we find that the percentage of
women in senior technical and engineering roles is way below our
expectations, and we have to take some steps to address that area.
Some thoughts that might be better: one, think about your role in that
environment, and how you as a woman can be successful. What are
your unique talents and skills in that environment? Find mentors,
particularly role models, other women who have worked through those
issues, and go and ask them and say, “Boy, how did you resolve that
situation, and how did you overcome some of those unique challenges
that you might have?”
Also, be ready to talk to your supervisor directly about some of those
concerns. It probably feels very uncomfortable, knowing that the
issues of male and female in the workplace can be quite challenging
and quite emotional. But think carefully about it, try to put the
emotion behind, and have that direct conversation about some of the
challenges of the unique issues that you might be facing.
If you do those things, you might find some little insights that help you
on a daily basis to be just a little bit better. And ultimately, if you’re
better, you’ll be more recognized, more satisfied, and more successful
with your job.
