Question:
Where are some of the key trends in technology going over the next 5,
10 or 20 years?
Answer:
Key trends in technology over the next five, ten, or twenty years—
well, if I could predict all of those, boy, I wouldn’t have to work
anymore. I would just sit back and invest in the stock market
appropriately.
These things are hard to predict. But a few things that are going on
today that we see could have a really big impact for the future. One is
this idea of what we call Web 2.0— the evolution of the internet to
become social, to become interactive, to become pervasive, and to
become globally-connected in a powerful way.
The result of that is, the way that we work is not just going out and
reaching a web page anymore. The idea of Web 2.0 is that it becomes
integrated into every aspect of your life, as well as in your business.
Key things that we’re doing in the silicon are some of the trends in
multi-core. The result of these multi-core processors is the fastest
improvement in performance that we have delivered in the history of
semiconductors and computers, increasing more rapidly than ever
before. We’re going to make applications possible.
Things like jeans-folding, things like global climatology, things like
absolute understanding of molecules at a level never understood
before are now going to become practical because of the level of
computing that we’re going to enable.
Maybe a final one is everything is wireless and mobile. Today,
everything that you get over a wire will become wireless. You’ll be
broadband internet connected any place you go, with high-bandwidth
connectivity for internet connections, for voice connections, for video
connections, for interactive communication and video conferencing. All
of those will be enabled for the future— and not just the mature
markets, but literally every human on the planet will get connected to
the internet over the next couple of decades. And that will change
society. It will change the world.
That’s the future that I’m excited about being a part of in helping to
create.
