Question:
How do you stay disciplined in and out of working seasons?
Answer:
How do you handle it when different projects just demand more of
your attention and time than you possibly can give?
Sometimes you’ve just to give it all. You have to work later, you have
to put in the time, and that will be a season, a period that just
demands more from you in the workplace.
What’s very important is that you have seasons where you balance
them out, and maybe at the end of a big project, you’ll make sure to
be home every night early, and have periods where you invest
specially with the kids and with your wife, to make up for those
seasons of great intensity.
Different periods always flow in the workplace. It’s important, when
the job requires it, to give your all, be the very best, be the one who
everybody is looking to for leadership and great contribution.
But then make sure that you put in those seasons in life as well, and
then be disciplined, to make sure that it’s not always just an intense
season.
Sometimes, you’ll start working later, because the job needs it. And
then the next project comes up, and you work a little bit later yet. And
soon, it’s 5:00, 6:00, 7:00, 8:00, 9:00 at night before you’re getting
home. The key is that you balance those periods.
Your family doesn’t care if you start earlier in the morning. They care a
lot if you’re home at those precious hours in the evening— hours from
5:00 to 8:00, or 6:00 to 9:00. That’s when the home is really alive,
and you need to be there.
Start early, get home on time. Balance your seasons of life. If you do
those things, you can have a great career, but also have a great family
as well.
