iQuestions Faculty, Randy and Elizabeth Draper
Question:
What are the benefits of building a home-based, direct-selling
business?
Answer:
ELIZABETH: I see lots of things that are a great benefit in owning your
own home-based business. One would be the flexibility. You get to
work the time that you want to work. No matter what your kids’
schedule is you can work around it. You have plenty of time to be able
to do all the things you want. You can even do the things you don’t
want to do.
Flexibility is one of the most important things that I think we’ve
discovered in owning our own business.
RANDY: We love the control. We’ve been doing this for 21 years, and
Elizabeth started out as a stay-at-home mom wanting to make some
extra money. I was a full-time homebuilder and we didn’t have a lot of
control because everything I did was always an out-of-control
experience.
But having our own home-based business has given us the ability to
have control around the things we want to do, work it as hard as we
want to, have fun as much as we want to, and do the things that are
really important to us.
ELIZABETH: Having a home-based business had increased our quality
of life. We have been able to go on vacations and do things with our
boys that we never dreamed would be possible. They have been able
to travel places that most of their friends never have been able to go
to, because we own our own business.
We have had all the things that you desire in life— let them go to their
own college, the college they choose because you can afford to do it;
have the extra money when braces are needed, and you don’t know
where the money is going to come from— a home-based business gives
you that ability to have the quality of life that you want that you can’t
have when you are working a 9-to-5 job.
RANDY: We have been able to enjoy a lot of tax benefits from being in
our home-based business. I would encourage you to find a tax
accountant or a CPA in your area and get with them and ask them to
tell you some of the benefits. They are awesome!
The nice thing about being self-employed is we get to keep most of
what we make, because there are so many great benefits and tax
advantages to having your own business.
ELIZABETH: We also enjoy the relationships we’ve made as a result of
our home-based business— not just the relationships within our own
family, but outside of our immediate family. We have met so many
incredible people, and have become great friends with them. That has
totally enriched our life.
