iQuestions Faculty, Randy and Elizabeth Draper
Question:
Why do some people frown upon direct sales businesses?
Answer:
RANDY: That’s a great question. A lot of times, people get a little bit
down on network marketing or home-based businesses because of the
way people work the business.
ELIZABETH: I think they’ve had past experiences or know people who
have had uncomfortable situations that they’ve been involved in.
For example, maybe they would go and listen to a presentation about
a friend’s company, and they decided that wasn’t for them and then
the person who shared the business with them treated them differently
afterwards. That’s going to put a sour taste in anybody’s mouth.
We’ve learned that when we tell people about what we do we let the
results be up to them. If they don’t want to do what we do, that’s
great. We are still going to treat them the exact same way we treated
them prior to telling them about our business.
I think that helps a lot of these people that have had a bad taste with
this.
RANDY: It’s really about people—and if you love people, you’re going
to do really well, because your desire is to help them.
We had a lady quit years ago, and I asked her, “Why are you
quitting?” and she said, “I don’t like people.” I said, “You made a great
choice,” because if you don’t like people, you’re not going to enjoy
building a home-based business that is built around people.
People are buying your product, people are looking for your business
plan, and you’re working with them to help them build their business.
So it’s really all about enriching their lives, encouraging them, helping
them, and working with them. When you have the attitude that you’re
going to help and encourage people, then it’s going to be positive and
successful for you.
If they tell you “no, I’m not interested,” and as a result you’re never
going to talk to them again, you’re probably setting yourself up to fail
in this business.
ELIZABETH: I think it’s important, too, that you are not deceitful, and
you’re not trying to maneuver or manipulate people to come to
something on false pretense.
You just have to be direct with people, tell them what you do, tell
them why you’re excited about it, tell them what it has done for you
personally or for your family, and then you just go from there. You
don’t become some kind of stalker or creepy person. Once somebody
says to you, “No, I don’t really want to do that,” then you’re fine with
that.
I don’t get into lying to people or trying to make something seem like
it is better than it is. I think you’re just upfront with people and honest
with them, and people are smart enough that they can make a
decision that is good for them and for their family.
RANDY: Be truthful, love the people, be encouraging to them, and
you’re not going to believe the opportunities that will come to you and
the business that you’ll build.
