iQuestions Faculty, Randy and Elizabeth Draper
Question:
Don't I need to be one of the first persons to join a home-based,
direct-selling business in order to really succeed?
Answer:
RANDY: A lot of times people think that if they get into a business
right at the beginning, that is going to be the best time for them to
start. The reality is, it „s a difficult time to get started because the
company is just getting going. The company is just getting products,
paperwork, handouts and all kinds of things together.
We got in when our company started 21.5 years ago, 90 days after the
company started.
ELIZABETH: It was a disaster. It was like digging out from a
basement. We had to figure out everything. We had nobody who had
gone before us to train us or to teach us anything, we didn‟t have a lot
of products, we didn‟t have catalogs or anything, and it was a disaster.
I don‟t know what it was that kept us going. It was just determination
and a lot of debt.
But getting into a company that is already established, is the best time
to get involved.
RANDY: We were taking the product and putting it on a Xerox machine
and making copies of it, just so we would have something to show
because the company didn‟t have any material available for us to use.
But I would encourage you to find a company that has a proven track
record, a system you can plug into, where they are excited about their
product and the people that you have met. Just get in there and go to
work, and listen to what they tell you, then go do it.
ELIZABETH: Absolutely. Don‟t think that “if I could get in on the
ground floor, that‟s the only time that I will have success in the
business,” because that is not true.
RANDY: And 95% of the companies that get started this year won‟t be
around five years from now, so you might be wiser to pick a company
that already has been around five years or longer.
