iQuestions Faculty, Randy and Elizabeth Draper
Question:
How do I assess the credibility of a home-based business?
Answer:
RANDY: There are a lot of ways you can find out if a company is
credible.
One way, if it is a direct-sales company, like the one we are a part of,
you could go to the direct sellers association website—it‟s
www.dsa.org. They have information about the companies that are
part of the Direct Selling Association. They also have great information
about how to find out if something is a pyramid scheme or not. They
will send you a brochure about the things to look for in companies that
might actually be out trying to take your money instead of trying to
help you build your business.
That‟s a great way to find out about some of the direct-selling
companies.
ELIZABETH: You could also contact the Better Business Bureau. That
gives you a lot of information on how they service the public, or if
there are any complaints against that company and whether or not
they have been resolved.
That will give you a lot of good insight on a company.
RANDY: And Dun and Bradstreet will have some great information
about companies, especially those that are publicly traded and held.
That would be a great resource for you, as well.
ELIZABETH: You could, if you wanted to, just call the company itself
that you‟re thinking about getting involved with and just say, “Can I
have some contacts that I could ask, „How do you like what you are
doing,‟ and, „How has this business been for you?‟” Get some
resources from them.
RANDY: Also get references from people who have been involved with
that company before. Just talk to them about their experience, about
how they enjoyed it, and make sure you get answers to your questions
and find out the facts you are looking for before you make a decision
to go to work with them.
