Question:
What can I do to improve my chances of getting a promotion?
Answer:
It’s a great question, and a very practical question. I think it’s
important for a person looking for a promotion or a pay raise to
remember that those two objectives are their objectives, not the
boss’s objectives.
With that clearly in mind, that the boss didn’t wake up this morning
saying, “Oh, boy. I get to deal with a pay raise or a promotion,” the
person seeking the pay raise or promotion should think rather of
what’s important to his or her boss. How can you serve that potential
boss or your boss where you want a pay raise?
If you will, months ahead of time, do your homework and identify what
his or her needs are, and align what you do clearly and crisply with
what is important to your boss, the possibility of being hired or the
possibility of getting a pay raise is greatly enhanced.
