iQuestions Faculty, Ron Blue
Question:
What are the primary abuses by home-based business owners?
Answer:
RON BLUE: This is something that is close to my heart, because I’m
the one who has answered the questions on the abuses, and I’ve seen
the abuses over the years. It’s interesting to me that network
marketing, multi-level marketing, home-based businesses, tend to
spread throughout the Christian world.
You ask, why would that be? There’s a tremendous amount of abuses
in the Christian world in this industry. The reason is most of these
businesses are built on relational marketing.
And what happens with people is that they overstep the bounds when
it comes to their relationships. I have watched you [Judy] understand
what the boundaries are. It’s the fact that maybe the product you’re
selling is beneficial to somebody, but there’s a boundary, and people
have the right to say no, and it needs to be respected. That’s one of
the biggest abuses that I’ve seen.
JUDY BLUE: One of the favorite things about the product that I sell is
that there really are a lot of respect for those boundaries, and respect
for people. We’re very educationally-driven, we’re about helping and
empowering you, not ultimately selling you a product, but about
providing you with a lifestyle solution.
RON: I think the second biggest abuse is the over-promised financial
results. Many times the home-based business company that is trying
to promote their business are selling the business, as opposed to the
product. If the product is not legitimate, the business isn’t legitimate
either. So, I think as a caution, if you’re being sold on a business
opportunity and about how much money you can make, I would run
away about as fast as I can. Because it’s all about the product, and not
about the business.
When you start seeing people talking about the business opportunity,
you’ve got a real problem, I think, in terms of the home-based
business. It’s not about the business. It’s a side benefit. It’s a good
benefit. But it’s not the primary reason for getting into it.
JUDY: I think what I’ve seen, primarily, over the ten years, is that
when the emphasis is on the financial benefit, it tends to have a
product with a short life. Yes, maybe you can make a lot of money,
with a little bit of effort, in a little bit of time, but it doesn’t have
continuing residual income. Which is what I love so much about the
product that I have. It’s a lifetime product. It’s a product that
everybody needs. It enables you to have a growing residual income.
RON: Be very, very careful about the relational abuses. Understand
that when people say no, it’s okay that they say no, there’s a whole
bunch of other people out there. Don’t abuse those networks that you
have, those relational networks that you have. Especially don’t abuse
them in the church.
Other than that, I wish you good success in the business.
