iQuestions Faculty, Ron Blue
Question:
What are the primary abuses by home-based business owners?
Answer:
JUDY BLUE: Benefits of home-based businesses. Little did I know how
many there were when I started in this ten and a half years ago. It has
been a phenomenal journey and a phenomenal opportunity.
First of all, you get to work from home—obviously, since it’s a home-
based business—but that means that you get to do it in your pajamas,
if you want to. It means you get to do it in your time schedule. It
means you can fold laundry while you’re doing it. It means you can
make dinner while you’re on the phone. There are just so many ways
that you could make it fit around your schedule, so that it works for
you, as well as you working for it.
Secondly, as a benefit, you get to build residual income—and I didn’t
really understand the value of residual income—but that means I get
paid, even when I don’t work. So, you establish a customer base, and
on an on-going basis, when I start my month from month-to-month, I
know that there will be money in the bank that’s going to come,
because of the consistency of customer base that I have.
RON BLUE: I don’t think every home-based business works that way,
but the one that you’re involved with, the health products, because
there’s a customer base that they’re buying product on an on-going
basis, that really works really, really well.
JUDY: Which is why you want something that somebody really needs
on a regular basis—that is a product that is consumable and is
recurring.
$500 per month would prevent 90% of all personal bankruptcies—so,
the opportunity to build income for people is absolutely huge. It is
beyond what I think most of us realize, given the fact that 80% of
people owe more than they own. So, for them to have the opportunity
to create $500-worth of residual income—but if you want to work hard
enough and long enough and have a long enough time perspective
with the home-based business, you can exceed any potential that you
might have had with your college degrees, as far as the income
potential. Because, with network marketing, with a home-based
business, literally, there is no glass ceiling. The sky is the limit, based
on how much you want to invest of yourself, and how long you want to
invest.
RON: You know, I think one of the things I have observed along that
line is that the benefit that you’ve received is not only are you helping
people from a health standpoint, but you’re helping some of these
stay-at-home moms add $500 per month—which maybe pays for
private school or extra clothes or vacation or something. $500 per
month to most budgets means a lot—and I’ve seen in your particular
case the personal benefit that’s not a financial benefit, but it’s the
personal benefit of helping people do a couple of things health-wise
and money-wise.
JUDY: You can help them accomplish their goals, while you’re
accomplishing yours.
RON: Right.
JUDY: So, personal growth would be another benefit—which has been
an unbelievable opportunity to create, to learn, to learn about business
Page -2-
models, to learn about business styles, to learn about managing all the
processes that you have to manage. As you do that, you also get a
wonderful growth in self-confidence.
And it makes you a much more fun and interesting person—
RON: [laughs]
JUDY: [laughs] —than I would have been, because after 30 years as a
stay-at-home mom, you know, I was never sure what I was going to
do when all my kids were gone. I was wonderfully blessed that the
Lord brought my home-based business into my life, right at the time
that my youngest left for college.
RON: [When the kids were moving out,] I remember many times Judy
saying, “I’m about to be fired.” “I’m out of a job.”
JUDY: I did get fired five times. Every time the kids left, I got fired by
one more child.
But this is a wonderful thing to do, because it gives me a flexible time
schedule—which means I can go visit my grandchildren, I can go help
when grandbabies are born, we can go see me kids. So, that’s another
benefit.
And then, your ownership. I mean, obviously, it is yours.
So, the home-based business, the way I see it, the benefits are, you
get to work from home, you get to build residual income, you get lots
of opportunity for personal growth, there’s a flexible time schedule,
and you get the privilege of ownership.
And I think it’s one of those things that basically works for everybody,
but primarily it works for single moms who want to create income so
Page -3-
they can stay home. It works for people who need a second income
that are having trouble paying for their car payment, or they want to
send their kids to private school—I have lots of people in my
organization who, the mom is working just so she can pay for her kids
to go to a private school.
And then I think it’s a wonderful thing for people like me, who are
empty-nesters, or people who are retired and are looking for another
way to create purpose and meaning in life.
So, it’s an income producer, and it’s also a purpose producer, and it
gives you perspective and potential that you didn’t realize that you
have.
RON: You know, I would say that one of the primary benefits that I
have seen—I’ve counseled widows over the years, and most widows
are extraordinarily insecure, no matter how much money they have.
And so, to watch Judy develop a business, develop the self-confidence
that she could create income, she could be self-supporting easily in
this business—to me, that’s been one of the best benefits.
I know that if I die before she does, which is most likely to happen,
she might miss me, but she could go on from a financial standpoint,
because she’s got the self-confidence of being able to do it.
