iQuestions Faculty, Ron Price
Question:
How can I best prepare for an interview?
Answer:
The vast majority of employers make their hiring decision based on
the interview. So how do you put your best foot forward?
There are four things that I would recommend you think about before
you go into the interview.
1. Know the company or know the organization that you’re going to be
interviewing with. Use the advantage of their website. Learn as
much as you can about them and what drives them, so that you go
in as somebody who is informed. This will impress them that you’re
good at preparation.
2. Know yourself. Know what it is you do best. Understand what your
past experiences bring to their organization that will help you
succeed in this new job, and understand what you’re passionate
about, and how this fits into this particular job that you’re
considering.
3. Think win-win. Think about mutually beneficial relationships
between you and the employer— and that means you should have
very good questions about how you can make the greatest
contribution for them, and very well thought out questions about
what you think is the ideal job.
4. Bring stories with you. What I mean by that is, bring stories of what
you have done in the past that have a comparison to the job you’re
interviewing for— because they don’t want to hear you say that
you’re dedicated, you’re going to be serious, and that you’re going
to be to work on time. What they want to hear is, “What have you
done in the past that is going to make me feel better about making
this decision to bring you into my company today?”
