Question:
I'm not sure what I'm really good at. Is there a way for me to discover
my hidden talents?
Answer:
It’s really not that unusual for people to come to me and say that they
are struggling with figuring out what they are good at, or
understanding what their real hidden talents are.
So let’s take a look at three things you can do to uncover your hidden
talents.
First of all, ask other people what they think you’re good at doing.
Oftentimes, they recognize things that we can’t see in ourselves, and
they will tell you what they have seen you do in the past that helps
you understand what the key is to a greater and greater future.
The second thing is to think about, maybe even journal about, what
really gets you excited. What are you passionate about? We
understand that what people really enjoy, they tend to perform at
higher levels in those particular areas.
And third, use personal assessments. If you have taken personal
assessments in the past, pull them out, look at them again from a new
vantage point, and see if you can uncover talents that maybe you
hadn’t recognized before. If you haven’t, find some way to take some
personal assessments, so that you can look at the way this
assessment unpacks and uncovers what your hidden talents might be.
When you use all three of these together— talking to other people,
thinking about what really excites you and comes natural, and using
personal assessments— you’re going to develop a rich picture about
what is unique about you, and how you can make the biggest
difference in the workplace.
