iQuestions Faculty, Ron Price
Question:
We seem to have constant turnover. Is there something I can do to
reduce this turnover?
Answer:
There are a number of businesses and organizations that struggle with
turnover today. A lot of factors may lead to turnover, from the kind of
business that you’re in to the type of people that you’re hiring. There
are some things that probably are outside of your control, but there
are also things that you can control.
So let’s look at what makes a good job. There are three basic things to
think about.
First of all, a good job provides security and an economic basis for
somebody to want to come to work every day. So is your job providing
that kind of environment of security— that feeling that if somebody
works for you, they are going to have the resources they need to live
life? That’s one of the first ways to cut down on turnover.
The second thing is, does the job that you offer give people
meaningful work and the opportunity for ongoing growth? Surprisingly,
most people don’t leave their job because they’re not getting paid
enough. Most people leave their job because they’re looking for a
better opportunity. They’re looking for something more meaningful. So
this is the second thing to look at in the jobs that you provide, make
sure that they provide something meaningful for your workers and an
opportunity for ongoing growth.
The third thing to look at in a good job is supportive relationships. The
truth of the matter is that people don’t really leave companies. They
leave managers. And they usually leave managers because there’s not
a strong relationship there of trust, communication and feedback, back
and forth. Make sure you don’t have a workplace that is filled with
gossip or filled with problems, relationally. Build strong relationships
into your culture, and you’re going to see your turnover drop.
