Question:
What obstacles do you need to overcome to run a home-based
businesse?
Answer:
The obstacles to overcome regarding home-based businesses—that is
one of my favorite topics, because I think the biggest obstacle for
most people is themselves. They are afraid of failure, they are afraid of
success, and they are afraid of rejection—and I think that’s something
every one of us has to work through.
No one wants to set yourself up for failure.
All too often, I think people get into home-based businesses with a
dream in the back of their mind that this is an easy way to provide
some extra income. Anything that you do requires some overcoming of
yourself. You have to become a self-motivator, you have to be willing
to learn, you have to be willing to grow, and the fact is, in order to get
better, you have to change—and every single one of us resists change.
So, you have to be willing to go in this realizing you’re into something
that’s going to require you to be out of your comfort zone on a regular
basis.
I remember the first three or four years that I was in my home-based
business, I felt like somebody was running on my tail, chasing me and
whipping me all the time, because I felt that I was just about to crash
just because I was always out of the edge of my comfort zone.
And there are still times, even after some years of being in it, where
you have to learn a new set of skills, you have to learn new things
about yourself, and you have to be willing to grow and gain the
confidence.
And you will fail. But how many times you fail is not what you have to
measure yourself by. What you measure is how many times you get
back up and you go again. So, I think yourself is the biggest obstacle
that you have to overcome.
Then, obviously, is the training. You have to be familiar with the
industry, and you have to be familiar with the products that you
have—and depending on how many products that you have available is
more or less information that you have to get, and how they meet the
people’s needs, the constituency that you have.
And then to really understand the industry, and I have to tell you: to
understand the opportunity of the industry of home-based business
and network marketing is unbelievably phenomenal—and I think that
it’s particularly important that people get a grip on that.
One of the most valuable tools for understanding that that I read was
the Kiyosaki Cash Flow Quadrant, and also The Business School, by
Robert Kiyosaki, that really helps you understand the power of home-
based business and the power of network marketing.
But I think that it’s really important that you know what you’re getting
into, and then be willing to take the steps to empower yourself to keep
taking the next step—so, it’s not anything unlike training for a
marathon. You know, if I’ve never run at all, and I’ve decided I’m
going run a marathon, then these are the steps that I have to take to
get to that point.

So, with any new venture in life, you have to be willing to understand
where you want to go, and understand what is necessary to be able to
get there.
RON: You know, I think, as I’ve watched you in this business, you
have become an expert in business. And Judy would bring to me
Robert Kiyosaki’s books, and said, “Have you read this? Do you know
this?” Well, you know, I read Robert Kiyosaki many years ago,
because he’s got some good things to say. And she became an expert
in business—“how does business work?”—and she became an expert
also in the health industry.
Judy has become a health consultant, because she understands the
product that she’s selling, and she understands the place that it plays
in nutrition. She’s really an expert when it comes to nutrition, when it
comes to exercise, when it comes to water, when it comes to all those
things that are important—and you know what? I’ve been the
beneficiary of all of that.
But I’m just going to “amen” everything that she says, because I’ve
watched her, and I’ve watched her overcome the fear of rejection, the
fear of failure, and I’ve watched her become an expert both in the
product and in the industry, and in how to run a business.
JUDY: I think the third obstacle, in addition to the obstacle of yourself
and the obstacle of getting trained properly would be the financial
requirements—and different home-based businesses have different
requirements.
I’ve heard some staggering numbers, and I’ve heard the one that I
have, which is wonderful. I had to invest all of $50. But then I had to
invest myself, and treat it as if it was a million dollar investment.

So, you know, what I’ve heard so often—and I want to say to
everyone who is considering a home-based business—if you treat it
like a hobby, it will pay you like a hobby, and it will also cost you like a
hobby.
If you treat it like a business, it will pay you like a business.
So, it depends on what your mindset is going into it. You have to
overcome the biggest obstacle, which I believe is yourself.
