Question:
What are some ways I can blend work and service?
Answer:
As you’re blending areas of your life, it’s really important to blend
service into your work life. This can be done either individually, or it
can be done organizationally.
Organizationally, many companies allow their employees to have
certain hours a month that they volunteer somewhere. And those
hours are paid hours that the employer absorbs in order to share that
employee’s service with another organization.
So choose where your passion is and then find several hours a week or
a month that you, on paid time, go out and work in that organization.
That’s one of the ways.
Individually, you can do things like serving at a tutoring program— and
again, this can be part of an organization or it can be something you
choose as an individual.
When my son was in high school, my husband and he once a week got
on a bus and they went with about twenty other people down into the
inner city of Chicago, and they tutored young people in a school
system that was very under privileged. It was a wonderful way for my
husband and son to share serving.
It was supported by the Chicago Tribune, which was the business that
he worked for. What he did was he asked if he could bring his son
along with him and teach him the value of service.
Going out in the community and reading to children in the grade
schools— during a lunch hour even— can be a wonderful way to blend
work and service together.
There are lots of ways you could lend work and service: giving blood,
donating to worthy causes, food drives, things like that. But always
thinking about the world outside of your organization, and what you
can do to contribute.
Try tying that into your work life to make this world a better place for
people, where maybe it’s not so good.
So how can you come up with some creative ideas, and help your
organization also to find some creative ideas to blend work and
service?
