Question:
I know that I’ve been saved, but can I lose my salvation?
Answer:
One of the most controversial subjects from a theological standpoint
is, “Can a person lose their salvation?” This is something that’s been
debated for years and years. Let me just say that I grew up believing
that you could “fall from grace”. And, I remember talking with
someone who did not believe that. They believed, “once saved, always
saved.” So, I said, “Why do you believe that? Because, I believe that
you can fall from grace.” All of a sudden, they came up with a plethora
of passages from the Bible. I was stunned because I hardly had any
support for what I was thinking. The truth is, you can’t be “unborn”.
I began to look at scripture, trying to understand what God’s heart is
for us. What I see is, when you are His child, you are His child forever.
He doesn’t leave you. It’s not a matter of Him being here today and
gone tomorrow. Because He says, “I will never leave you, nor forsake
you”. (Hebrews 13:5) Some of the most important scriptures for me to
look at, in order to know what God says is Romans 8:1. It states,
“There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” It’s
apparent to me that God wants us to feel secure and for us to
understand that we can have eternal security.
Now, someone came to me and said, “No, no, no. No one can ever
know if they have eternal life. No matter how good you are, you just
don’t know.” I showed this person this scripture, and it was like, “Oh,
wow. I had never seen that.” 1 John 5:13: “I write these things to you
who believe in the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal
life”. God wants you to know that you have been given eternal life.
I’ve asked people before who have struggled with this issue, “Well,
when you were saved, you were given eternal life; is that right?”
“Yes.” “How long is eternal?” “Uh. . . . Forever?” “Right. So, if you
were given eternal life, and it’s forever, how can you lose that which
has been given to last forever?”
What’s so special is when God adopts us into His family, He knows that
at times we’ll stray, just like in any human family. There are times
when like a child we will make a wrong choice, but over time, there
will be a maturing. He doesn’t give up on us. That’s why I’ve tried to
put into our Biblical Counseling Keys information on the assurance of
salvation. These are real questions that people ask. In fact, there are
many fallacies that people believe that can be answered with facts. So,
I have fallacy, fact. Fallacy, fact. Fallacy, fact… The bottom line is,
when the Lord created you, He had a plan for you. He wants you to be
secure. The reason He tells us that you’ll have eternal life is so you will
be so aware of His presence in you. He’s living in you 24 hours a day.
His purpose is to conform you to His character.
Even though at times we will fail, even though at times we choose to
sin, we can always say, “Thank you, Heavenly Father. You are my
personal Heavenly Father and You haven’t given up on me. I am
secure in Your house forever”.
