Question:
What do I need to do to go to heaven? And, what does it mean to be
“born again” or to become a Christian?
Answer:
I know what it’s like to not know what salvation is. I remember
thinking, “What do I need to be saved from? I’m not a wino in the
gutter. I’m not drowning.” And, I was hearing some wording about
being saved, salvation, “Jesus saves,” but didn’t see how that applied
to me because I knew I wasn’t being immoral. I did not have a
concept of what it meant to make wrong choices. I made wrong
choices many, many times—that’s what God calls sin.
I happened to be around some people—unlike people I had typically
been around—these people seemed to have something I didn’t have. I
didn’t know what it was, but I did know I wanted it. I would call it a
well-spring of depth. There was a peace, something about them that I
really was drawn to. I thought, “Well, if I just stay around them
enough, I’ll get it.”
I began to hear them say a phrase over and over again, that
Christianity is not a religion, but a relationship with God. I didn’t
exactly understand why they wouldn’t call it religion, because I
thought it was a religion. Later on, as time went on, I saw the
consistency of these lives. I saw how they walked their talk, and I
went to someone and said, “How do I know if I’m Christian? I think I
am.” She said, “Would you be willing to do whatever it takes to
become a Christian, if you’re not a Christian? I can’t know your heart
like God does, but would you be willing to do whatever God will want
you to do?” I thought, “Well, what if it doesn’t work?”
I knew it would have something to do with some prayer. I also
thought, “Well, if it doesn’t work, then I guess it doesn’t work.” But
what if it would have worked and I refused to do it? I could lose a lot.
So, I remember thinking, “OK. I guess I’m willing to try.” So I
humbled my heart and prayed a prayer asking Jesus Christ to come
into my life—to take over control of my life. Afterwards, I wondered if
there’s going to be some sign, like a burning bush or something in
heaven, but there was nothing like that.
I went on living my life, and some people saw me a year later—exactly
a year later from that time—and they said, “My, have you changed.
What’s caused this change in you?” I thought, “Change?” I didn’t know
what to say. Some other people said the same thing: “You’ve changed
so much. I kept hearing this, but I didn’t have a clue what they were
talking about. I thought, “What’s different? Well, I did pray and receive
Jesus as my Lord and Savior.”
In truth, I needed that changed life. I didn’t realize I had it when I
received it, but God was changing me from the inside out. When God
created us, He gave us choice. We all have choice—and He knew we
would choose the wrong thing, at times. The problem is that sin
separates us from God, that’s what the Bible says. God wants us to
have a relationship with Him that lasts throughout eternity—it’s called
eternal life. Jesus, Who is God; there is God the Father, God the Son,
and God the Holy Spirit; Jesus, Who is God, was willing to come to
earth to live a life perfect. Upon His death, He chose to die on the
cross for our sins—the sin that separates us from God. He died on the
cross for our sins. If you and I would humble our hearts and receive
Jesus on the inside of our lives, He would come in and literally forgive
the guilt of our sin. He would then live in us and change us from the
inside out.

You now have the opportunity to humble your heart, to receive Jesus
on the inside of your life—giving Him control of your life. The Bible
says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.” (Acts
16: 31) The word Lord means Master, Ruler, Honor. It’s giving him
control. When you entrust your life to Him, give Him control, then He
comes into your life. You give Him your life, He gives you His life, and
He comes to dwell in you. He then guides you. He changes you to be
the person He created you to be.
Let me ask, “Is this a need in your life? Is God leading you to pray a
prayer of genuine salvation?” If so, why not pray with me right now.
Receive Jesus Christ on the inside of your life, so you will be saved
from the negative consequences of your sin, and saved to live in
heaven with Him eternally. Pray with me, if that is what you are willing
to do. “God, I ask you to forgive me for my sin. I need you in my life.
Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. I’m asking you
right now to come into my life, to take over the control of my life. I
give you ownership of me. I’m asking you to come in and change me
inside out, to make me the person you’ve created me to be. Thank you
for what you will do in me, to me, and through me. It’s in your
precious name, I pray. Amen.”
If you prayed that prayer, let me just say, welcome to the family of
God, because you have been born again into His family. You are now a
child of the King. You’re a child of God, and He promises He will never
leave you or forsake you. You have a home in His heart forever.
