Question:
I would like to be given more opportunities in my workplace. How can
I prove myself?
Answer:
If you want to find more opportunities to contribute in the workplace,
there are two words I can suggest: observe and ask. Don’t wait for
them to come to you. You go looking for them.
As a matter of fact, we’ve found out that 85% of the time that people
get promoted it’s because of one of three skills that they’ve
developed— maybe a combination of all three. So let’s look at them
together.
The first is thinking skills. It includes things like planning and
organizing. It includes conceptual thinking— the ability to envision a
better future. These thinking skills are a very important part of
leading.
The second is achieving skills. It includes how great of a self-starter
you are. How much accountability you take for the results and how
well you manage your time and your priorities.
The third area is relating skills. This has to do with how you interact
with other people, how good of a listener you are, how good you are at
influencing others or leading others or developing others.
So in these three skills: thinking skills, achieving skills, and relating
skills, you find the core reason why people get promoted, at least 85%
of the time.
