Question:
I feel out of control in my personal and professional life. What can I do
to regain control?
Answer:
It’s not unusual for folks from time to time to feel a little bit out of
control. We live in such a fast-paced society. So what do you do when
you’re feeling out of control?
I like to think of it as being on a journey. You’re moving from the land
of victim to the land of control, and the bridge that you cross over is
the bridge of choice, the power of choice.
This is a simple concept, but it’s really powerful when you apply it to
your work and your life, day-by-day. The concept is that there is a
space between the stimulus that’s being thrown at you day-in and
day-out and your response— meaning, how you respond to it.
You know you can’t always control the circumstances, but if you can
think about this space between stimulus and response you can gain
greater control over how you respond to the circumstances. So, I can’t
keep some people from mistreating me, but I can control how I
respond to those people who mistreat me.
I can’t prevent all of the set-backs that happen in business, but I can
control how I respond to those set-backs that happen in business. So
think about creating that space between stimulus and response.
Recognize the power of choice that you have and you’ll get back into
control.
