Question:
I have a good job but I don't find it fulfilling. What can I do to address
the situation?
Answer:
You might find yourself in a job that is a good job, but you don’t feel
fulfilled in it. You can’t quite figure out why and you think about, “How
do I get over this discontentment that I have?”
Sometimes discontentment is actually a good thing, because it moves
you to a better future. Let’s take a look at what makes a good job
first.
There are three basic areas that you can use to define a good job, and
these might help you understand what part of your job that’s not
fulfilling.
The first area is that the job provides economic viability and security
for you. That means that it’s providing you with what you need to be
able to take care of your family or your personal needs.
The second area of a good job is that it’s meaningful work and it gives
you ongoing opportunities for personal growth. Is this the area that
maybe you’re not feeling fulfilled in—you don’t feel that you’re making
a meaningful contribution? Or you don’t see ways that you can
continue to grow in the process?
The third component of a good job is supportive relationships. You feel
that you’ve got good people around you who are going to help you to
succeed and you’re going to be able to help them succeed, and there’s
a sense of community that grows out of working together.
So by looking at these three areas—economic viability and security,
meaningful work that provides for personal growth, and supportive
relationships—you can zero in and find out what part of this job is not
fulfilling for you.
It may give you some great ideas for how you can get more richness
and more benefit out of that job, without ever having to think about
going to anything else.
