Question:
How can I tell if a company fits my personality and work style?
Answer:
When you’re going to interview for a job, one of the things that I’m
sure you’re concerned about is how well the company’s culture fits
your personality and your work style, and how you prepare for that.
The first thing you need to do is make sure you’ve got your personality
and work style well defined. What matters most to you? What are your
values? What does the ideal or perfect job look like for you?
A lot of times when people apply for a job, they feel so much in a
powerless position—hoping they’ll get hired—that they don’t take the
time to define what it is they want out of the job.
The first step is to make sure that you understand what you’re looking
for, and if it’s reasonable.
The next step is to create questions based around what you’re looking
for that you can ask as part of the interview. Don’t just ask, “Are you a
good company to work for?” I mean, who’s going to say, “No, we’re
not a good company to work for”?
Instead ask a question like, “Can you give me an example of how you
handled a situation where an employee had an unusual crisis, and how
you worked out the adjustments that you had to make in order to
make space for them to handle that crisis that occurred in their life?”
Or other kinds of what we call “behavioral-style questions,” that ask
the company to tell you specific examples of what they’ve done in the
past that will help you to understand what their culture is and whether
it’s in alignment with what you’re looking for in your perfect job.
