iQuestions Faculty, Ron Price
Question:
Our company is small but we still believe in giving new hires good
training. What's the best way to train new employees quickly and
efficiently?
Answer:
So you might run a small company and you really believe in training,
but you have a limited budget. How can you give a new employee a
great start?
There are three simple things that will help make a big difference.
The first is to make sure they have a meaningful job description that
really articulates what superior performance is in their job.
The second thing is to assign them a mentor right out of the gate,
somebody who’s a buddy. It doesn’t even have to be somebody who’s
teaching them everything in their job, but somebody they can go to
with questions, somebody that can be a resource for them so that they
get the information they need. And they’re going to get integrated into
the company as soon as possible.
The third thing is, right from the beginning, to set up a series of
appointments with them, either with you or their supervisor, or
somebody who can continue to enrich their awareness of the company
and how their job fits into the company.
It may be a weekly lunch—or maybe monthly, or quarterly—but have
things scheduled right from the get-go where you’re asking them,
“What can I do to help you do a better job?”
If you’ll do those three things, you’re going to help every one of your
new employees get off to a better start and get training faster than
any other way.
