Question:
Is there a way to get a bad employee to quit rather than having to fire
him or her?
Answer:
There’s an interesting thing that I see happening with employers
sometimes. They know that somebody doesn’t fit, they know they’re
not performing up to snuff, but they don’t have the courage to just go
ahead and deal with it.
So instead they do all these nasty things to try to get them to not
want to work there anymore. That’s what a friend of mine refers to as
“wimp junction.” Don’t go there. Don’t wimp out.
Have the courage to sit down with somebody and say, “I know that
you care. I know you want to perform at a high level, but it’s not
working out. We’re going to make a change.”
Even though they’re not going to feel it at the time, you have to
believe that you’re doing what’s best both for them, and for your
business.
It’s best for your business because this is a waste—this is a lot of lost
energy. A lot of folks don’t understand how much energy they’re
spending on a non-performer until they’re gone.
It’s a good thing for the employee because there’s some other place
where they can be fulfilled, where they can be successful, and you’re
keeping them from it the longer you hold on to them.
So muster up your courage and do the right thing. Go ahead and make
them know that it’s time to move on to something else.
