Question:
Does God’s Word have anything to say about my finances?
Answer:
You know, I’ve been in the financial services world for forty years—
interviewed by the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and have
been on lots of televisions programs—and one of the things I have
found is that God’s word speaks to finances in such a way that you
always have the answer when you know what His word is.
As I look back over the financial advice I’ve seen people give and the
financial advice that I’ve given—regarding investments, retirement,
debt and any area of the finances—what I’ve found is that every piece
of good advice that is given has its root in a biblical principle. For
example, the book of Proverbs says, “Consider the ant who stores up
in the summer for the coming fall and the winter.” (Proverbs 6:6-11)
The book of Ecclesiastes says, “Put your harvest out there among
many things” (Ecclesiastes 11:1-2) —diversify your investments, in
other words.
God’s word has over 2,350 verses that deal with money and money
management. It says more about money than any other topic in the
Bible. It says more about money than it does about prayer or faith or
heaven, even. The reason for that is, it’s not because it’s a book about
money management, but because money management goes to the
root of belief systems and goes to the root of character. So, God’s
word speaks about money and money management because “how I
spend my money” is a reflection of my belief system, and it’s a
reflection of the character that I have that also God’s word speaks to a
lot.
If I look at just five things that I can do with money, God’s word
speaks to giving; God’s word speaks to the taxes that I pay; God’s
word speaks to paying off my debt; God’s word speaks to saving for
the future; God’s word speaks to the lifestyle that I might have. And
really, those are the only five things I can do with money anyway.
So, if you’re looking for a source of wisdom that’s not going to change
when the markets go up or the markets go down, or whether we have
a change in political administrations, whether we have inflation, or
deflation, or depression, or whatever it is, you can look at one place
that’s never, ever going to change. You can even take that place with
you, if you go to Africa, to England, to Canada—wherever it might be,
God’s word is transcendent. It’s transcendent over time, and it’s
transcendent over circumstances. You can count on it.
