Question: 
 
Is insurance scriptural? 
 
Answer: 
 
One of the great confusing and frustrating areas in financial planning is 
insurance—you know, “How much do I need?” and, “How long do I 
need it?” and, “What’s the best kind?” For the Christian, there’s 
another question, and that is, “Is life insurance really scriptural? Does 
it not say in the Scripture that God will provide for me?” and the 
answer to that is, “Of course, yes, He will provide.” But it also says, in 
I Timothy 5:8 that “a man is worse than an infidel that does not 
provide for his family.” 
 
My father-in-law was a physician and he did not believe in life 
insurance. He developed cancer and died at age 42. He left a widow 
with three young children and he had almost no life insurance. That 
had a devastating effect on this family, who had been accustomed to a 
particular lifestyle, had three children to educate, and not the financial 
resources to do it. It immediately forced my mother-in-law to go back 
to work. His decision had consequences in terms of how the family was 
raised. It was a very, very poor decision on his part. 
 
I was teaching a class one time, and I said, “How do you handle the 
question that God will provide?” and there was a life insurance agent 
who was in the audience, and he held up his hand and he said, 
“Whenever anybody says that ‘God will provide,’ I tell them, ‘Well, who 
do you think sent me?’” That’s a good question. Who do you think sent 
the life insurance agent? 
 
 
 
There’s a lot of very, very godly, good life insurance agents who know 
how much life insurance you need and the best kind of life insurance 
you should have. 
 
My counsel is this: You should never, ever be under-insured. It is a 
poor stewardship decision to be under-insured, especially for the 
father of the young family.
