Question:
Are taxes scriptural?
Answer:
You know, probably nobody likes to pay taxes. Everybody would say,
“If I didn’t have to pay my taxes, then I could do a lot of other
things”—and the reality is, that’s true. If you didn’t have to pay your
taxes, you would have that money.
But you know, taxes are as old as the Bible. Even the tithe in the Old
Testament was used to support the government needs, if you will,
because the government was the Church. The tithe, a lot of the tithe,
went to providing services for the poor, the orphaned and the widows.
In America today, we pay taxes, and the reality is that we don’t pay a
significant amount of taxes vis-à-vis the rest of the world.
Jesus said, “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s.”
(Matthew 22:21) So, even He said, “Pay taxes”—He paid taxes, if you
remember the New Testament story. Paul said, “Pay your taxes.”
So, are taxes scriptural? Yeah, they are scriptural. Well, what if you
don’t like the way the government is using your money? That doesn’t
make any difference. We have a democracy in this country, and of
course, you can do your part to change the government. But just not
approving of what the government does with your money is not a
biblical reason for not paying taxes.
Taxes are scriptural, taxes are certain. You should just plan for your
taxes, not avoid your taxes.
