Question:
I have a chemical dependency that I can’t kick. How do I stop?
Answer:
Whenever we have any addiction, whether it’s a chemical dependence,
or whatever the addiction, whatever the negative habit is, the
tendency is we don’t want to deal with it, because it’s hard to change.
So, what would give us victory? There are several key points. The first
is to admit there’s a problem. Instead of trying to change the truth,
deal with the truth. In fact, what we are promised in the Bible is quite
powerful. In 1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just,
and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness”.
So, the issue isn’t just stop; stop the addiction, stop whatever it is
you’re taking. The issue is to first admit there is a problem. Then
evaluating, “What am I doing? What’s happened here in my life? It’s
not just the physical act, but what do I need to know about me?”
In fact, there’s a prayer that is valuable: “Search me, O God, and
know my heart; see if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in
the way everlasting”. (Psalm 139:23-24) I suggest not only admitting
there’s a problem. I think the next step should be to say, “God, you
made me, You know how to fix me. I give my life to You. I relinquish
the control. I’m trying to stay in control, but I’m giving control of my
life to you,” and mean it from the bottom of your heart. Ask Jesus
Christ to come into your life, to be your Lord and Savior, and give Him
control of you.
What He’ll lead you to do is, search your heart. Who do you need to
forgive that’s wounded you; that’s hurt you? Even if that person is
deceased, you can literally choose to release all that pain into the
hands of God. You can write everything down that’s been painful, and
then release it to the Lord. Choose to forgive—to dismiss the debt.
You see, when we are right before God and right with others, we don’t
need to self-medicate, due to the pain that we are experiencing. We
find that He heals our pain.
These are just some of the first steps in the process of healing. This is
a part of what we suggest for bringing hope from alcohol or drug
abuse. You see, no one has to stay mastered by anything else. If there
is any substance that has mastery over you, it’s like you are the slave
of it. Instead, the Lord Jesus Christ wants to be your Master, because
He wants to set you free. Let Him do so.
