Question:
What is the best schooling option for a Christian...Public, private, or
home school?
Answer:
You know, where to send your children to school is a big, big issue for
parents. A lot of debate—home school, public school, private school,
Christian school— nd what I find, as I answer questions, is that people
raise the question to me as a financial question, but it’s really not a
financial question, it’s really a priority question that has financial
implications.
So, you as a couple can make the decision of, “In our scale of things,
in our goals, in our priorities, we want to home school our children, or
we want to send them to a Christian school, or we want to send them
to a private school.” And that’s a priority decision, and there are
financial consequences to it.
Now, what it may mean, from a financial standpoint, is that you have
to give up something in some other area of your life—and that’s OK.
My own feelings on schooling, with five children that have gone now
through college, and in some cases through graduate school also—
we’ve had them in public schools, we’ve had them in private schools,
we’ve had them in Christian schools, and we’ve even home schooled.
And what we have found is that the needs of each child tend to be
different. So, we didn’t set a standard answer for each one of our
children. What we tried to do was to say, “What are the needs of this
child?” and put them into the right schooling situation for them.
And those needs changed over time. We found that our kids finished
college with tremendous Christian commitment, and yet they went to
all different kinds of schools when they were growing up.
We were more sensitive to what their needs were in the short term,
and trusted that in the long term, it would all work out—and as a
matter of fact, it has. I’m very pleased with how our kids have turned
out, from a character and from a spiritual standpoint.
Don’t get confused and make your schooling decision a financial
decision. It really is a priority decision that has financial consequences.
To explain this a little bit, you may have to give up some things if you
want to send your children to a private school or to a Christian school.
You may have to not drive the car that you were thinking that you
would like to have. You may have to give up something in terms of
your vacation. You may have to give up something in terms of eating
out.
In other words, you can’t always have everything—and if the schooling
decision is a priority decision, it means that it has a higher priority
than something else in your budget, and you just have to make those
changes.
