Question:
I struggle with feeling like I don’t have any value. I don’t feel like God
loves me. Do I have to change before God will love me?
Answer:
If ever you’ve struggled, feeling like “God doesn’t love me,” I have
some good news for you. God—who created you—loves you. In fact,
we read in the Bible, in Jeremiah 31:3; “I have loved you with an
everlasting love. I have drawn you with loving kindness.”
In terms of His love, the most famous passage in the New Testament
is John 3:16: “God so loved the world,” and that means you, “that He
gave His one and only Son, so that whoever would believe in Him
should not perish, but have eternal life.”
There are times when we have specific things that we say to
ourselves, like, “I just can’t do anything right!” Well, the Lord says, “I
will give you My strength to do what is right”. In fact, that’s what we
read in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ, Who gives
me strength”. The point is, we need to learn to see ourselves through
God’s eyes.
I wrote a book. It’s a 31-day devotional. I heard that it takes twenty-
one days to form a new habit, so I thought; let’s give 31 days to form
a new habit. And, I took the statements that God says about us,
letting us know that when we literally give our lives to Christ, there are
all of these wonderful things that happen. We are adopted by God. So,
when you give your life to Christ, you are adopted by God. You
become a child of God. You are called precious to God. You are
accepted by God. You are chosen by God. You’re saved by God.
Justified, redeemed, forgiven, washed, reconciled. And, I explain what
all these terms mean. You’re given a new heart. The Bible says, “I will
give you a new heart.” This is the Lord speaking. “I will give you a new
heart. I’ll put My Spirit in you, and remove from you your heart of
stone. I’ll put My Spirit in you and cause you to follow My decrees, and
be careful to keep My laws.”
See, the issue isn’t the focus on the past. The issue is what He’s
wanting to do in you, to you, and through you, now. In fact, I
remember when I was writing this devotional. I was a little stumped
over “holy” because I thought “whoa.” Because we’re told that we’re
holy, and yet I certainly didn’t feel holy. I was dealing with these
Christian words, biblical words, and I wasn’t raised knowing what all
these words meant. So, when we read in the Bible, “Be holy because
I’m holy,” some people go; “Oh . . . I’m so bad, there’s no way,” and
they struggle with low self-worth.
Let me tell you how I answer that. My uncle Jimmy in Idabel,
Oklahoma; in the back of his house, he raised certain things. He was a
county clerk—he raised watermelons. And he put into my hand a little
seed, and he said, “June, one day this seed will become like that
watermelon—that big.” And I thought, that’s impossible. Here’s a little
seed, it’s black, and here’s this watermelon that’s green—and huge!
But, you see, when you receive Christ on the inside of your life, you
are given the imperishable seed on the inside of your life. The past is
not going to look like what you’re going to become; even the present.
Don’t be consumed with how things are now. You see, the word holy
means “set apart.” That seed is set apart to ultimately become a big
watermelon.
You’re not created to be a watermelon. You’re created to grow and
grow and grow in the character of Christ. And, as long as you

cooperate with Him, yielding your will to Him, you won’t deal with the
issue of low self-worth. You’ll replace those times of pain with “Oh,
look what God is doing in my life now.”
Lord, I do choose to be set apart for You. Set apart from sin. Set apart
for God.
You are going to be the person God created you to be. And that means
that you have infinite worth in His eyes.
