Question:
I don’t think that my life has any purpose. How can I know my true
meaning and purpose for living?
Answer:
Everyone has purpose in life. Why? Because God is a God of design
and purpose. He’s the Creator, and as a Creator—He has intelligent
design.
If you will, it’s kind of like a watchmaker. A watchmaker makes a
watch, not just by going “hmmm . . . hmmm . . . hmmm. . .” There’s
intelligent design, to design the watch in a way that the parts all fit
correctly.
So, what is your purpose in life? I have talked to some people who will
say, “I thought my purpose was. . .” And then, they would state
something that was taken away from them—like a parent with an only
child—and the child dies, and they feel like they no longer have
purpose in their lives. Or a man who loses a job, and that job was
everything to him, and now he’s lost his purpose.
Think about this. Your purpose should be that which is so foundational
that it can never be taken away from you. So, since God is the Master
Designer, with intelligent design, what would His purpose be for you?
He has stated what your highest purpose is. This is found in Romans
8:29: “That you be conformed to the character of Christ.” Now, think
about it. If your highest purpose is to be conformed to the character of
Christ, would you be a good person? Yes. Would you live according to
the Bible? Would you glorify God? Yes. You see, when you get first
things first, all the other things follow in line.
Now, when you have the right target, of being conformed to the
character of Christ; that’s the why of your life. Your purpose is the
“why” of your life. Why did God put you here? God wants you to line
up your life with His purpose.
I would say if you’re a parent, one of your purposes would be to be the
wisest parent you could be, as long as you have any child that is alive.
God has a plan for you, and that plan is good. Ask Him, “Reveal to me,
Lord, what are your purposes for me.” There won’t be just one
purpose. “What are your purposes for me? May I learn to say no to the
things that are not profitable, and yes to the things that are right in
His sight,” and then enjoy the purpose for which He created you.
You can’t be any more fulfilled than being in the perfect will of God.
Doing what He asked you to do. What He planned for you to do. What
He designed for you to do—according to His purpose.
